Day 16 - Sunday June 26th
Weather - Again, a nice day (it's getting monotonous). Sun, some cloud, mid-low 20's.
This was our original celtic cultural day. After spending the night in a traditional celtic tomb-like abode we headed up north through Sligo to Drumcliffe to look at Yeats's country and visit his grave. A little further on was an awesome mountain range - Benbulben.
We then decided to go back about as far as we could - a megalithic cemetary site in Carrowmore. This has tombs dating back to 4100BC. That's even before the pyramids. The tombs are rocks arranged in a small 'table' like structure, or some circles or even just a pile. Any country boy would just assume that many of them were piles of rocks removed from the ploughing (beleive me, Cory's skeptic eye was working overtime) but they've done all the tests! ;) Orignally, many of these were actually under HUGE mounds of pebble/rocks, some of which could still be seen at the top of hills and mountains on the horizon of the surrounding area. Quite humbling.
Then, it was heading back to Dublin, with views of the River Shannon along the way, and the Boyle Abbey, which although really only now a ruin, still shows how well they built things back in the 10th Century as how well the main walls and arches held up.
Once back in Dublin, we headed out for some more brews at www.porterhouse.com and then off to a 'traditional Irish food, music and dancing night'. The food was OK, the music was shite (OK, they were Eye-rish ditties, but some old git warbling away with his sons accompanying on guitar (the Martein case revealed a takamine) and two Korg keyboards). We'd seen better elsewhere. The dancing was great though, but it would be very difficult to keep that activity up for too long.
When we were walking home at 10:30 we were quite astounded to see that it was still light outside.
